Navigating Around The Sportsbook

Now that you have deposited at least £10 into your account, you are ready to place your first bet. Betfair offers two methods of betting. The sportsbook – which works like a traditional bookmaker – you bet against the bookmaker at the odds that they offer.

There’s also the exchange, where you bet against other punters like yourself. Read more about exchange betting further down the page.

Click on ‘Sportsbook’ in the top-left corner, under the Betfair logo.

Click on ‘All Sports’, which is on the left-end of the navigation bar underneath.

For the purpose of these instructions, I’ve clicked on Football and will be betting on the England match this evening.

Click Sportsbook, then football. Lets get these £10 bets placed to get our £20 bonus

Adding A Selection To The Betslip

Once on the Football screen, I now need to drill down to find a match I want. You can do that by clicking ‘Today’, or by picking from one of the popular choices shown.

As I want to bet on today’s England match, I’m going to click ‘International Friendly’.

I’m shown two fixtures, one of which is the England game.

Choose the selection you wish to bet on by clicking on the odds of the team you want to back. In this case I will be betting on England to beat Turkey at decimal odds of 1.53.

Click the odds of the team you wish to bet on. In this ca

The Betslip

The Betslip will appear in the top-right hand corner as shown in the screenshot.

Ensure the selection is correct (in our case, England) and that the odds are above 1.2 (decimal) or 1/5 (fractional).

Stake at least £10, and hit the yellow ‘Place Bets’ button.

You’ll then be shown a receipt confirming the bet. Good luck!

The betslip will appear in the top-right corner with the slection you have chosen. Check the odds are above 1.5 (1/2), the stake is £10 or above and click ‘Place Bet’

How To Find & Use Your Free Bets When Placing A Bet

  • Once your qualifying bets have settled (the match has finished and the bet won/lost), Betfair will reward you with your €/£20 free bets.
  • Place your free bets by choosing a selection as previously instructed. This time, tick the free bet option on the betslip in order to use your bonus bets rather than your actual balance.

Simply tick the checkbox to confirm that you wish you use your free bets. We recommend using them on something like an accumulator or a high odds horse to get the best possible return for your free money!

Acca Edge & Other Special Markets

Betfair have a great sign-up offer for new customers, but also offer regular promotions to their existing customers including casino bonuses, free spins, enhancements on sports bets, free bets, their acca edge and cash out feature.

Acca Edge

Betfair have launched a new promotion in 2016 allowing existing customers to get cash – not free bets – when one leg of their accumulator lets them down.

This offer spans across several sports, leagues and matches. When existing customers add selections to their betslip, it will show if the acca edge offer is available. If it is, the accumulator total odds will be shown, along with the acca edge total odds. These acca edge odds are slightly less than the normal odds, but with the advantage that if only one leg lets you down, you’ll receive a complete refund in cash – not free bets.

Accumulators need at least three selections adding to them. An example would be betting on Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea all to win on a Saturday. A normal treble with these three selections may return odds of 10.5. Acca edge may offer odds of 7.5 – which whilst it means a lower return if the bet was to win, it gives you the safety of a refund should one of the three teams fail to win their match.
The difference in the odds isn’t set in stone – it seems to vary depending on the number of selections added to the betslip, and the odds of those selections. In the example in their promotion screenshot, it seems like the acca edge odds are 10% – 15% lower than the standard odds.

There’s no limit on your stake or minimum odds – the days of being let down by one loser are over!

Cricket Betting

Betfair have a huge sports audience which stretches further than the usual football, basketball, baseball, golf and horse racing markets. Cricket betting with Betfair is huge- both on the exchange and with the sportsbook. Cricket fans can bet on mainstream events such as the Indian Premier League, Test Matches like the Ashes and the Cricket World Cup.

The inplay features of the sportsbook will keep you updated with the live score and latest odds, allowing you to make informed decisions. Users can discuss cricket matches on the forum too.

Political Specials

With Brexit being the talk of the town in 2016, users wishing to bet on political events such as the election, US politics, EU referendum and the Mayor of London markets can do so with Betfair. The same bet £10 get £30 free bet code applies here too, as political markets are displayed on the sportsbook. Trump, Republicans, Tories and Brexit can all be backed with a £30 free bet if users sign up with the ZSK200 promo code and follow the guide further up this page.

Cash Out Your Bets

Betfair were one of the early bookmakers to offer cash out. It’s now active on their sportsbook and on their exchange – allowing you to profit before an event has even started in certain circumstances.

Bets on loads of markets and sports such as Football, Horse Racing and Tennis can be cashed out. The cash out link is on the black navigation bar on the desktop site, just next to the ‘In-Play’ button. It displays all your current bets that are eligible for cash out – all you need to do is click the big yellow cash out button when you’re ready to do it.

There’s a confirmation button – just to double check you do want to cash out. It helps to prevent any accidental taps of the button.
Betfair have implemented a cash out slider – for those occasions when you want to cash out a bet – but still satisfy that curious part of you and leave some of your stake running until the bet has been properly completed.

Delays are sometimes added to cash out – it stops players being able to take a cash out if Betfair haven’t had time to adjust the amount during in-play games – like when a goal is scored. You’ll see a green success message if the cash out went through properly.

Cashed out bets show up straight away in your balance and can be withdrawn immediately.

Easy cashing out bets with Betfair, just tap cash out then hit confirm….Done!

The Exchange

  • Betfair gives out £10 free to new exchange customers. This guide covers the very basics of how the exchange works, for details of the sports book read this guide and information on the Betfair app is here.
  • The Betfair exchange is separate to their sportsbook and works completely differently to a traditional bookmaker. Betting on the exchange involves backing a bet, and laying a bet. Backing works in the traditional sense, where you place a bet on an event you think will happen.
  • Laying is the opposite, as laying a bet is your way of saying that event will not happen. For example, in a match between Chelsea and Everton, laying Chelsea is betting on Chelsea to not win the match – so if Everton win or the match ends in a draw, your lay bet will win.
  • Betting on the exchange does not involve the bookmaker. Punters are betting against each other.
  • In a match between Chelsea and Everton, if were to lay Chelsea, you are betting against those people that have backed Chelsea.
  • Betfair will charge 5% on any bets you win on the exchange. This is how their business model works, and ensures they remain profitable regardless of the outcome of sporting events.
  • The Betfair exchange is where you bet against other punters, rather than the bookie itself.
  • It works the same as Smarkets, Ladbrokes exchange and Matchbook does – but is massively popular – with more markets and money available to place bets.
  • You ‘back’ a selection (blue boxes), and if someones opinion of the match outcome differs, they can bet against you. This is called ‘laying’ (pink boxes).
  • In the example we have chosen, you can bet on England to win at 1.91 (the blue box).
  • You can also lay England to win at 1.92. This means you’re betting that they won’t win – so you think the match will end a draw, or Turkey will win.
  • Any winning lay/back bets are charged 5% commission by Betfair – this is how they make their money.
  • The exchange gives you, the punter, the ability to put money on a selection you at odds that you desire. If another punter disagrees with your selection at the odds you backed, they can lay your selection. This will mean your bet is matched.
  • If a bet doesn’t get matched, it’s status will show as ‘unmatched’ – and it’ll be voided.

Lets say for example that you backed England to win in their game against Turkey. If you back them to win at odds of 2.5, and someone else thinks they won’t win, they can lay them at odds of 2.5. The bet will then be ‘matched’.

The betfair exchange. Click the blue odds button on a selection to back it. Click the pink odds button to lay it (bet against it happening).

The Betfair exchange can be used from your mobile or tablet by downloading the iOS or Android app

Independant Reviews & Feedback

Betfair is the first and currently the largest sports betting exchange in the world. The company was founded by Andrew Black and Edward Wray back in 1999. They introduced a new concept of players betting against each other instead of placing wagers against the house and it grew widely popular in the following years. This lead to the launch of other gambling products such as poker and casino in the early-mid 2000s.

Betfair

In April 2006, Softbank acquired 23% of Betfair when the company’s value had surpassed the £1 billion mark. Other important steps were the acquisitions of Timeframe and the American TVG network which helped Betfair enter the radio and TV world with its own products.

The next important milestone in the history of the company came in 2010 when it was listed on the London Stock Exchange. The initial price of each share was £13 for a total estimate of £1.4 billion.

Betfair Odds

Betfair didn’t stop there and the next step was to move all operations to Gibraltar in 2011 as this significantly reduced taxes. As many other gambling operators, the majority of the company’s staff is still located there up to this date and the license from the local gambling committee is the one used for most countries.

In order to expand, Betfair obtained a license in multiple other jurisdictions around the globe such as Australia, Bulgaria, the USA and many more. Another step in the company’s growth was the launch of the traditional bookmaker service in 2012 that is meant to compete with the biggest players in the industry.

In the second part of 2015, rumors emerged that Betfair was negotiating with the Irish giant Paddy Power for a possible merge. The deal was completed at the beginning of 2016 and the new company Paddy Power Betfair is currently based in Dublin, Ireland.

The operator has a great reputation, but as all members of the industry, there were some controversies in the past. Betfair has been constantly attacked by various traditional bookmakers that it endangers the integrity of various sports by creating an environment in which the outcomes are manipulated. It has also been accused of false advertisement and data leaks.

None of those managed to hurt the image of the company significantly and it remains the biggest sports betting exchange today, with daily volumes bigger than their competitors put together. On top of that, Betfair has sponsorship deals with many sports associations and clubs around the globe. The priority in this regard is the English Premier League, as Betfair has partnerships with the current champions Leicester, Arsenal, Sunderland, Southampton and the relegated Aston Villa.

I already had a Betfair account back in the day I think. Just got signed up again as I noticed they’ve added a sportsbook. Pretty impressed, never really like the old blue website when it just had the exchange and all the pink and blue buttons. Never liked the concept of laying a bet and having to have a big balance to afford the liability. I did the bet £10 get £30 new customer offer and got credited with the £30 of bets, they came through as three separate £10 free bets. Used them straight away on some longshot accumulators to to recover my losses from England losing to Iceland! Still a sore subject!

Been a top quality gambler (or terrible punter as my friends call me) for a while now, but often get back to Betfair. They’ve got some good new customer account offers and usually have a few specials floating around for the boxing, football and rugby. At the moment they’ve double odds on winning single bets on Wimbledon. I think the winnings are credited as free bet tokens, but still, this is what more bookies should be doing. Ladbrokes have been trying to compete with Betfair’s exchange for a long while now - but it doesn’t come close. Wait for a mainstream event like El Classico or the Manchester derby to kick off and look at the sheer volume of money being traded. It’s absolute madness, but I like to watch which way the markets respond to certain team news and injuries. Many professional gamblers trade on the exchange when they spot value - as the size of their stakes would just be rejected by the sportsbook traders. It’s usually a sign that something is worth backing.

I always found Betfair quite hard to use, but recently I think their app and website is one of the best around. They’ve got an android app that I use on my galaxy S6 and an iOS app that I’ve got on my iPad for the Saturday afternoon footy! The cash out function has always been reliable, miles better than other bookies that have recently added it as a feature. The acca edge feature is a bit of a life saver for those weekends where the top of the league usually goes and gets beat at home to a bunch of nobodies and stops me from being too angry! Just can’t wait for the new season to start again now and then I can get organised with my lucky 31 longshots on the both teams to score coupons.

Everything about Betfair has been a breeze since I joined. I used the sign up offer guide that you guys have on here and used the promo code mentioned. Bet £10 on a Champions League qualifier (The New Saints!) and got my £30 in free bets almost instantly. I’m glad I read your tutorial so I knew exactly how to use them when placing the bet. I see Betfair have recently added this new ‘Horse Finder’ which allows you to filter through the upcoming horse races and pick out a horse/trainer/jockey combination based on certain criteria - such as ‘Winner Last Time Out’, ‘Top Trainers’ and that sort of thing. I liked the idea but I’ve noticed over the years that these gimmicks are often added to mug off the punter and profit the house. The ‘Top 6 Most Popular Bets Today’ usually involves 6 odds on favourites that most mug punters would be throwing in an acca. This draws in the average gambler when they see the £20 returns £457. Us disciplined gamblers need to keep our heads down and stick to the well researched tips!
